John Michael "Mike" Simmons, a devoted husband, father, and patriot, passed away on February 8, 2024, at the age of 67. Mike's unwavering dedication to his family, community, and country left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Born and raised in Bonifay, Florida, Mike's heartbeat for the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide. His passion for the team's victories and losses was unparalleled, embodying the spirit of “Roll Tide” in every aspect of his life.
With a commendable 20-year tenure in the National Guard, Mike served his country with honor and distinction. Outside of his military service, Mike found joy in the simple pleasures of life. An avid fisherman, he cherished time spent by the water, surrounded by nature's beauty. Additionally, his love for sports extended beyond the battlefield, as he passionately engaged in basketball and participated in the men's softball league alongside his close friend Oakley Strickland.
Among his favorite pastimes, golf held a special place in Mike's heart. He relished the camaraderie shared on the green and the challenge of perfecting his swing.
Above all, Mike's greatest source of happiness was his beloved family. He treasured every moment spent with his wife, son, and grandchildren, finding immense joy in their laughter and love.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John Robert Simmons Jr. and Margaret Maxine Dunlap Simmons, one brother, Ricky Simmons, paternal grandparents, John Robert Simmons Sr. and Allie B. Simmons, and maternal grandparents, Dolsey Dunlap and Maggie Dunlap.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gayle Simmons of Bonifay, FL; one son, Nathan Simmons of Bonifay, FL; three grandchildren, Brianna Simmons, Annabelle Simmons, and Lexi Burger; two sisters, Corey Williams and husband Marc of Havana, FL and Judy Killingworth of Dothan, AL; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 11:00 AM February 17, 2024, at Shady Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Nelson officiating. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Peel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM at Shady Grove Baptist Church.
